Visit to Charlottesville Ballet Company Studio

on Mon, 10/26/2015 - 19:03

On October 25, 2015 our Chapter Meeting was held at the Charlottesville Ballet Company Studio. Charlottesville Ballet is actually two entities: a professional ballet company and an Academy serving over 400 students. The meeting was organized to strengthen links with the organizations and create awareness with our members that although musical theatre is the theme for the 2016 National Career Competition, in 2017 it will be the turn of ballet.

We met with Emily Mott Hartka and Sara Clayborne, the co-directors of the professional company, but also with Caitlin Lennon the Company Manager of the Chrlottesville Ballet, who gave us a tour of the facilitites that include five spacious studios and a studio theatre.

The Academy now has over 400 students and has grown exponentially since it was founded in 2009. We then enjoyed a presentation on the activities of the company, we were treated to some wonderful choreography and dance performances by a very talented team that included apprentices, trainees and some principals from as far away as Russia and Australia. The program included a World War II era piece "Letter to my Love" and an excerpt from Emily Hartka's "Fairy Tale Gathering", a children's ballet in which Aurora, Cinderella and Snow White vie for the attention of Prince Charming (who at six foot seven must have been one of the world's tallest dancers).
