The Ever Changing American Circus

On Sunday March 4, 2018 come meet and hear a nationally known historian who has taught the only college-accredited course in America on the history of the circus. La Vahn Hoh, Professor Emeritus of Drama from the University of Virginia, has been featured in USA Today and People Magazine. His history of the circus has appeared in the World Book Encyclopedia; Hoh has been the archivist and historian for Ringling Brothers and Barnum and Bailey Clown College, has appeared in several Arts and Entertainment Network presentations, and his accomplishments go on and on.

A Visit to the Nichols Galleries, Barboursville

What a beautiful fall day for our visit to the Nichols Galleries in Barboursville and the opportunity to see a demonstration by the silk screen artists!


Fred Nichols gave NSAL members and their guests a private demonstration of his silkscreen techniques as well as a tour of his galleries where a variety of artwork was on display.

NSAL En Pointe Ballet Competition in Boca Raton

Pat Davis and Diana and Peter Freeman attended the finals of the En Pointe national ballet competition in Boca Raton Florida between May 31 and June 4, 2017. Our chapter finalist, Karen Fleming, is a High School Senior in Yorktown, Virginia. Karen will be attending the University of Richmond in the fall on a full tuition scholarship as a dance artist.

Karen won first prize of $1,000 at our chapter competiton and an expenses paid trip to compete in the finals. Although she was not placed she performed very creditably.

A Springtime Serenade

Casa Maria in Greenwood, the elegant home of Cynthia Tremblay, was the venue for our Spring Serenade fundraiser. The program featured Kelly Sulick on the flute, Elizabeth Roberts on the bassoon and Content (Corky) Sablinsky was the pianist.They played an unusual repetoire of music for flute, bassoon and piano commencing with a trio by Beethoven, progressing to a duetto concertato on themes from Verdi and more modern pices by Bill Douglas and Chick Corea. The finale was Primavera Portena by Astor Piazolla.

Kelly teaches at UVA and serves as Principal Flute in the Charlottesville Symphony.
